*Only, not. I’m staying at a family house on a lake but it’s 15 minutes from our normal house and my wife and I are both still going to work... maybe taking Friday off.
Still, the view is nice to come home to, we can go in the boat at a second’s notice, and we aren’t compelled to do chores for an hour or two after the kids are in bed, we just sit on the porch and chat, perhaps with a cocktail. I actually read 50 pages of my book last night, which was great.
Side note: in the picture below, there used to be a 50' hemlock that died about 5 years ago - you can see the stump, actually . All my childhood it was there providing shade to the lawn, house, porch, etc. and now it’s gone, so we planted a few replacements. The kids also planted acorns in their sandbox a few years ago and those trees are already doing quite well! Go figure, you can shove an acorn into sand, totally neglect it, then bam! Oak tree. It’ll be neat to show the kids pictures of them playing in that sandbox when those trees are towering over them 30 years from now.
For now, back to work.

I’m going to the beach tomorrow but I just rolled out new recruiting software with all the hiring managers at my company so I volunteered to check my email & recruiting notifications while I was at the beach. Just to make sure things go smoothly.

Beautiful. Awesome that you have a place like that for your family.
A couple years ago, my wife and I decided to move out to the country (after considering getting a cabin for a little while). We have a nice home with a pool, on 10 acres with a 1/2 acre pond, surrounded by hay fields and pasture. It makes every trip we take 10 minutes longer (my drive to work is 35 minutes) , but it’s so worth having our “getaway” every night and weekend.

Some people would draw that line differently, but I say, I’d rather check my email at the beach than find out what happens when I put sand on my desk and open a Corona while generally staring at the wall, daydreaming.

Totally agree. Our normal house is on 5 acres, but it’s in a very quiet neighborhood surrounded by mostly undeveloped land (that may be changing, but it’ll still be pretty quiet up there). It certainly makes coming home nice, even when we’ve been away at a nicer place. The view helps, too:

Absolutely! Swam in it last night. And almost swam in it this morning instead of showering. Instead, I did neither lol.
Last night some friends came by with their boat and we went wakesurfing, which I haven’t done in a couple years. Their boat threw a very nice wave for it.
Kids went to bed with wet hair from swimming. Always a good way to end the day.

Awesome little getaway even if you have to still work.
A coworker a couple weeks ago was in a friends wedding in Idaho and she worked and dialed into meetings while there and enjoyed the scenery otherwise.
I’ll admit I also love when I travel for work to pretty places - back in June I was in Denver for a week and didn’t have to pay for any of it, worked during the day and headed into the mountains and hiked/fished until dark every night.

I still miss my camp, next year I’ll go. My siblings that still live in the area at least take care of it. We originally had a small cabin that was built in the ‘40s, but in the mid 80’s my dad tore it down and built this. The only prefab was the rafters, the rest he built and did himself (with family help).

Looks beautiful! Ours was built in the 40's too, and a lot of it is still original. No real major renovations, for better and for worse. I feel like there’s a lot of deferred maintenance that my parents just don’t do for whatever reasons. But it’s functional and we love it.

I don’t really get to travel for work, but we live in a place where a lot of people come for their vacations; so long as I don’t lose sight of that it’s a great place to live! Having this place just across town is a huge benefit.

For my dad, it was our summer home and the old cabin was literally falling apart, probably about 500sq ft or do. We lived there the day after school let out until he day before school started. After my mom died, my dad wanted to build something new and named it Camp Anne. Problem is, when I go....I don’t want to leave!

That’s a nice place to be. The wife and I have been dreaming about moving out west lately for just this reason.
